A lone lit elevator standing in the middle of a wide lawn at dusk

From Somewhere

Different beginnings. The same dream.

We found each other. And somewhere, the story goes on.

Scroll down, back into the dream

TEASER

A dream has begun.

A dream has begun, in the belief that we will meet again.

The belief that even if, one day, we are thrown into a world as cold as a dream and wander without end, we will not forget each other, and in the end we will find each other again. The promise that in this world, where we met as if by fate after living inside our own stories, even if a day comes when we lose our way and drift apart again, we will surely find each other.

A glass greenhouse in the middle of a library

From somewhere. To somewhere.

What I first imagined was a far stranger, more frightening Halloween story. But the more I planned it, the more I kept coming back to the same questions. Why do I want to bring characters from different stories together? In people from different lives and different stories, connected to one another, what is it I feel, and what is it I want to share? Those questions turned, in the end, into thinking about relationships. The direction, and the warmth, I want a relationship to have. Even in a made-up world, I hoped respect, hope and beauty could live side by side. And in a place this strange and cold, I thought what would make those things shine brightest is faith in one another, and friendship. Written down, it sounds a little grand, and I'm a bit shy about it, but that is the feeling I wanted to show through this dream.

Inside the greenhouse: under the teal glass dome, an empty desk and a single chair

People are far more many-sided than we think. Someone you kept at a distance shows you an unexpected kindness; someone you believed was close turns out to love the very opposite of what you do. Life is full of such contradictions and ironies, and so the world is always a little hard to understand. That is why the twisted world of the dream is not so different from the one outside. So this dream begins at school. I chose places everyone knows, a pool, a gym, an open field, a library, and set in each one thing that does not belong. A bus stop in the middle of a gym, a greenhouse inside a library. Freud called the unease of the familiar gone slightly wrong "the uncanny". Within that misplaced familiarity, they set out to find each other. The classroom I kept back, for the ordinary day after the dream ends.

An empty indoor pool with a red phone booth in the distance

CALL

Keep moving. We'll find each other.

I knew the first scene of this dream had to be a phone call. I wanted to show the scattered ones slowly drawing closer to each other, in the distance between hearts and between bodies alike. The first thing that came to me, as a beginning, was a phone ringing somewhere. A call when you don't know who is calling feels strange, and so, mysterious. A pool full of water is blue all over. As the one colour to set inside it, I chose a red phone booth. A small red in cold teal holds the eye, intensely.

David holding the receiver inside the red phone booth

DAVID…Hello?

DANNYTook you long enough.

DAVIDDanny? Where are you?

The first face to open the dream is David's, vivid and strong. The red light was a good link. It makes David's dark hair and strong features stand out all the more clearly, and it is also the colour of Danny's red hair, on the other end of the line. His hesitant first word, "…Hello?", carries the curiosity of not knowing who will answer, and the moment he hears Danny's voice, that curiosity turns into gladness. And he asks: where are you? Around the time I was sharing the world of Dwenhadan, I once heard an interesting story about the chemistry between David and Danny. Ever since, when I look at the two of them, I feel how alike they are: outgoing, full of energy. That is why David's first call had to be with Danny.

Danny smiling with the receiver in the same phone booth

DANNYCouldn't tell you. The décor's terrible, though.

DAVIDYou sound way too calm about this.

DANNYKeep moving. We'll find each other.

Danny is in the same booth, framed the same way. The same place, a different time. In different times, from the same spot, the two of them are joined by their voices. Danny, who doesn't know where he is, opens with a joke about the décor. In that easy, unbothered way of never losing his cool, wherever he is, there is perhaps a wish to hold fear at bay, and there is simply Danny being Danny. It is a charm of his I wanted to show, even if only briefly. And then Danny says it. Keep moving. We'll find each other. These words become the promise that opens the whole dream. That if we don't give up and keep moving, in the end we will surely meet.

A dark gym in the rain: Ethan sits in a glass shelter as Javi walks towards him with an umbrella

FIND

There you are.

A gym where it rains indoors. Rain belongs outside, and a bus stop belongs by a road. Both have lost their place and sit in a vast dark. Ethan sitting under cold fluorescent light, and Javi walking out of the dark with an umbrella. Rain falling where rain should never fall: that alone makes the dream strange and mysterious. And this rain is also a small trial the scattered ones must go through to reach each other.

Ethan in the rain, eyes closed, earbuds in

If it was going to rain, there had to be somewhere to shelter. I first meant to put the bus stop somewhere outside, but as the places came together it ended up in the middle of a gym. In rain no one knows the start of, Ethan sits alone at a small bus stop. No one knows yet what happened before he came here. Only that Ethan believes he has been left here alone.

Javi standing in the rainy gym with an umbrella

JAVIThere you are.

ETHANYou were looking for me?

JAVIObviously.

Javi and Ethan both have dark hair and fairly pale skin; both are athletes, yet carry something quiet and shadowed. When I pictured the two of them together under blue light, I felt this pairing would suit it best. Quietly, but firmly. Instead of long speeches, they trade a word at a time. Asked whether he was looking for him, Javi says "Obviously." As if no explanation were needed.

Javi turning to look, under his umbrella

ETHANI thought I was the only one left.

JAVINot anymore.

An umbrella is the smallest roof there is. It keeps off the rain and guards whoever stands beneath it: a refuge you can carry. The moment one person brings it and two people share it, that small circle becomes protection, and calm. To Ethan, who thought he was the only one left, Javi answers "Not anymore." It is the moment the belief that he is alone comes to an end. There is a small story behind this last shot. Javi was meant to say it looking at Ethan, but in a test take he came out speaking straight to the camera. It was a mistake, yet it felt more fun that way, so I kept this framing. Thanks to that, Javi's line became words spoken to everyone on the other side of the screen.

A blue lawn after sunset; Ryan walks towards an elevator standing on its own

PASSAGE

Just hold on. I'm coming.

The blue hour just after sunset: an elevator stands in the middle of the school lawn. No walls, no building; standing alone, it is a door that could lead anywhere. The story now heads for its climax. Set on the way there, this is the only place in the dream where you can see the sky. With one door out of its place, the familiar view turns strange again.

Ryan seen from behind, standing at the elevator doors

RYANJust hold on.

For some reason they came into this world scattered, and set out to find one another. Ryan stands at the very moment of setting out. From "some people", Ryan heard that someone with blond hair was somewhere. In this dream, apart from Ryan, only one person has blond hair. "Just hold on." Ryan is sure that Owen is there.

A finger pressing the elevator call button

RYANI'm coming.

If they were joined by a voice, then met under an umbrella, this time one of them goes to find the other himself. That is how the connection slowly deepens. An elevator stands for movement itself; it is the most dynamic thing in this dream. In the cold blue, the button glows warm. And the fingertip pressing it is the moment of resolve. I have a clue. I know who you are, there. I don't know where you are, but I'm coming now. "I'm coming."

WAKE

Like we always do. Together.

The doors open onto a library. Endless shelves and tall arched windows, calm and grand, yet no sign of anyone. Past Ryan's back, dead centre, stands a glass greenhouse. Inside a quiet library, a glass greenhouse quieter still. Yet inside it, life was quietly thrumming. An ironic place, where the most living thing breathes in the stillest spot.

Inside the light-filled teal greenhouse, Owen asleep at a table

The others were lost or waiting; Owen is asleep. Like this greenhouse, where life grows quietly, Owen sleeps in the stillness. In this dream, a sleeper does not wake until someone who truly knows them calls their name. Waking someone who has fallen asleep inside a dream is also the first step out of it. That is why this chapter is called WAKE.

Owen asleep, his face on his arms

RYANOwen. Wake up.

OWENRyan…?

Ryan and Owen, both kind in a way that is gentle and firm at once, meet in one place. Arriving on certainty, he meets a voice that answers with trust. And so their friendship does not lose its way, even in a dream.

Ryan sitting on the table as Owen looks up at him

OWENWhat about the others?

RYANWe'll find them. Like we always do. Together.

The first thing Owen asks, once awake, is how the others are. A first word just like Owen, who cares for his friends and loves them. "Like we always do." A resolve that, just as they have always been together in life, they will be together this time too. Danny's "We'll find each other" in CALL carries on as "We'll find them", and becomes everyone's promise, and the hope that they will meet again.

Ryan's face in the teal greenhouse

OWENWait… how did you know I was here?

RYANSome people told me.

Asked how he knew Owen was here, Ryan answers that some people told him. They show themselves at the very end of this dream.

Arian and Caleb sitting across from each other on a Sicilian villa terrace above the sea

EPILOGUE

They have each other. They'll be fine.

The dream was blue and cold, but the reality they return to is full of light. The first scene is a terrace in Sicily, looking down over the sea. If the blue of the dream was the colour of a cold, deep night, the blue here is the midday sea and sky. The same blue has come back at a completely different temperature. Arian and Caleb, who walked behind the others through the dream, now sit face to face.

Caleb holding a teacup in the sun, looking into the distance

CALEBI wonder how they're getting on.

Lost in thought for a moment, Caleb speaks with his teacup in hand. Even awake, his heart is still with the friends he met in the dream.

Arian smiling softly with the sea behind him

ARIANThey have each other. They'll be fine.

Arian answers with a smile: they'll be fine, because they have each other. As long as we have each other, someone we can rely on, we will all be fine.

Ethan and Ryan side by side at a sunlit classroom window, looking at each other

ETHANI've been hitting the gym twice a day, working on my speed and agility for the game.

RYANIt's paying off. We'll be ready.

A classroom by the window: Ethan and Ryan at desks pushed side by side. They are talking about the coming game. Easy, warm sunlight fills every part of them.

David and Owen in matching hockey jerseys on a bench, smiling at each other

DAVIDPractice felt good today. You were really sharp out there.

OWENThanks. We moved well today. It felt easy with you.

David and Owen in the same team's jerseys, sitting side by side at the ice rink. They are talking about today's practice. In the most symbolic place of all, where their hearts come closest.

Owen, David, Javi and Danny eating sandwiches around a round table in a sunlit cafeteria

OWENThese are actually really good.

DANNYTold you they'd be.

A cafeteria full of afternoon sun. Owen and David, Javi and Danny gathered around one table. Setting out from different stories and scattered across different spaces, they laugh together now, having kept their faith and their promise.
